Water bottles, plates, grocery bags are all items we recycle. But the question many of us have is where do our plastics go after being recycled? A Capital Waste general manager, and a DHEC State recycling manager, was interviewed to tell more about where recycled items go. Mr. Chelsey stated “Plastics are picked up and taken to processors like Sonoco then taken to markets that is processed and turned into a new material”.
Depending on what it’s made out of plastics are often categorized from numbers 1-7. Other items such as water and soda bottles are categorized from numbers 1-2. Plastics 1-2 are most known for being reused and made into other products.
Unfortunately plastics 3-7 are relocated to landfills to be disposed of. Less than 2% of plastic waste in South Carolina are collected are labeled as plastic due to a process called single streaming.
Since 2012 51% of the plastic from the Untied Sates have been shipped to China for disposal. Now that China is no longer taking recycled items the question still is were does the recycled items go?
