Opening weekend a success
March 12, 2015
Revenge is what some players see it as. ¨Losing last year we wanted to come in with the mind set that we were going to win and mow these people down¨ Junior pitcher Noah Crumlich says. The Cavalier baseball team has had a shaky past with the Red Bank Invitational. The Cavs were win-less in the 2014 tournament, including a notable loss against Mauldin High School, but the team was prepared with a new mindset this year.
On the first night of the tournament, the Cavs took a tough blow losing 8-3 to former 4A competitor Blythewood High School. The Cavs didn’t give up though and successfully beat North Augusta 4-2. The next day, with revenge in their hearts, the Cavs were determined to beat Mauldin. The Mavericks scored 2 in the first inning but the Cavs answered at the start of the next inning. From there, they could not be stopped, scoring 7 points in the 2nd inning. The Cavaliers defeated Mauldin 8-5.
Former pitcher, Eric Manning, was in the stands. Watching his former teammates play made Manning nostalgic. ¨It made me miss playing with them very much. Especially since I’ve been playing with them for a long time. Last year we lost and this year we beat them [Mauldin]. It was just great seeing everybody all hyped up after that great win.¨
The Cavs ended their tournament run 2-2 after a close loss to Carolina Forest (Myrtle Beach).
¨It’s all about getting better every year and I believe they have a strong team this year.¨ When asked if they have state champion potential Manning replied, ¨If they stay focused, then of course.¨
Post tournament, the Cavs are 1-0 after a 7-1 win over Airport last night. Their next game is set to be against former rival, Spring Valley, away next Monday.
