On Aug. 12 and 20, SGA hosted the Club Fair. SGA set up booths in the courtyard, where interested students could sign up. On Aug. 20, the band and the cheerleader performed.
Last year, there was a two-lunch schedule every day to prevent misbehavior and promote safety. However, this year features a one-lunch schedule for clubs every Wednesday.
“If you’re going to have clubs,” SGA Director Regina Cherry said, “we have to at least give them an opportunity to have at least one meeting.”
Previously, with the two-lunch schedule, clubs struggled to find a single meeting time.
“We felt like we didn’t have enough kids interested… because they didn’t know what we were doing.” Language and Culture Club advisor Jazmin Quinonez recalled.
Quinonez wanted to educate her members on cultures from around the world. Although she planned many activities last school year, the two-lunch schedule made it difficult to retain members. Clubs can meet after school, but many students can’t get transportation, or have prior commitments.
Because of this, the one-lunch schedule was implemented.
“I had some advocates in the administration that pushed for it,” Cherry said, “we had one lunch last year, and y’all did pretty good behavior-wise.”
So far, the new schedule seems to be working.
“It makes it easier for us to organize and have enough time for activities.”
