Name: Marques Smith

Position: Point Guard
Coach Jacob Lourie’s lookout: “He is a coach’s dream to be honest, and he is a great kid off the floor. He makes good grades, and I don’t have to worry about him getting in trouble. He has a wonderful family, a really nice kid, and a hard worker. He does everything that you ask, and it has been great to coach him.”
What is your first memory of playing basketball?
When I was younger, I “wedgied” the ball on the front of the rim and it was kind of embarrassing.
Who were your role models growing up?
My dad got me interested in basketball, and I watch a lot of Steph Curry. My dad coached me when I was younger and put me around which got me interested in the game.

How was the transition from your basketball career at your previous high school to RNE?
I had to take over a bigger role at RNE. I had to do everything at my previous school, but now I have better teammates and coaching.
Have there been any specific people on the team that have particularly helped you? How so?
My assistant coach makes sure we always get some late work in and watch the game to help me improve as a player. Coach Davantae.
How do you feel about being nominated for The State’s boy’s basketball player of the week?
The tweet surprised me considering the competition we had, and I was really excited to see I got nominated for player of the week.
