Girls basketball preview: Changing the mentality
Coach Cicely Jenkins says they are looking forward to this season if her player’s “buy in”. So far this strategy has worked with the team having improved their record to 2-2 after it being 1-17 last year.
“Stressing the importance of mental toughness but we also let the girls pick their own core values which are: commitment, communication, discipline, and hard work,” Jenkins said. She said these values are expected to be followed by all players inside and outside of practice.
Lujain Jallab was a part of the team last year and can vouch for the improvement seen in the team. “[I] keep working hard, like not stopping during the game and playing with all I’ve got basically,” Jallab said.
“Just keep thinking we are up, just have confidence,” she added. Besides the mental changes, Jallab said that conditioning, running, and a boost in the team chemistry have helped the team improve.
“I am trying to compete, hustle, and just keep the team together,” Janiyah Cosby said.
Being a sophomore on varsity means work went into getting there.
“I worked out with my dad and played AAU so that helped me get ready for this year,” Cosby said. She added that she’s most looking forward to winning, especially against Westwood and A.C Flora.
