On Oct. 15, the South Carolina Department of Education and the S.C. Education Oversight Committee published the School Report Cards for the state. These report cards reflect the 2023-2024 school year.
The overall score for Richland Northeast was 39 out of 100, which is Unsatisfactory, the lowest rating category, and dropped from 41 the previous year. According to the S.C. School Report Card website, the rating means “school performance fails to meet the criteria to ensure all students meet the Profile of the SC Graduate.”
There are different rating systems for elementary, middle, and high schools. High schools are judged in two categories – Academics and School Environment – which are then split into other sections. The Academics category includes Academic Achievement, Preparing For Success, Multilingual Learners’ Progress, Graduation Rate, College and Career Readiness, High School Student Success, and State Goals (which does not factor in the rating for schools).
RNE’s scores for these categories are as follows:
- Academic Achievement – Below Average
- Preparing For Success – Unsatisfactory
- Multilingual Learners’ Progress – Unsatisfactory
- Graduation Rate – Average
- College and Career Readiness – Average
- High School Student Success – Unsatisfactory
The School Environment category includes the School Climate (rated), Classroom Environment, Student Safety, and Financial Data (all not rated).
In the only rated area of School Environment, which was School Climate, RNE scored a Below Average.
Of the 32 K-12 schools in Richland Two, RNE was the only school to receive a score of Unsatisfactory.
The other high schools in the district – Blythewood, Ridge View, Spring Valley, and Westwood – received scores of 66 (Good), 59 (Average), 59 (Average), and 43 (Below Average) respectively.
RNE was one out of 49 schools (primary, elementary, middle, and high) in the state to receive an Unsatisfactory rating. Out of the 1,261 schools rated in S.C., 232 schools scored Excellent, 317 scored Good, 477 scored Average, 186 scored Below Average, and 49 scored Unsatisfactory.
