The Saber is an online publication run by the students of Richland Northeast High School, dedicated to accurately reporting for and serving the local community.
Mission
The Saber aims to promote student expression while telling accurate stories that reflect the news, personalities, and culture of the Richland Northeast community.
Purpose
As all content in The Saber is 100% student-generated, all views in The Saber are 100% student-centered, and all duties are performed by students. Staffers aim to tell stories of concern or interest to the Richland Northeast High School community, as well as the communities of Columbia. The adviser’s role is to guide student journalists toward responsible and ethical decisions as they pursue these stories.
The Saber staff adheres to The Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics, including:
- Seek the truth and report it.
- Minimize harm.
- Act independently.
- Be accountable and transparent
Copyright policy
All rights to Saber content, including photos, stories, interactives, and anything else on our website or in our print editions, are retained by the publication. Any reuse of these pieces must be done with the publication’s permission.
No copyrighted material will be published in The Saber without written permission from the copyright owner unless it safely adheres to Fair Use guidelines. Neither images from the internet nor music will be used unless either permission is received or it is obtained from a copyright-free site, in which case it will be properly credited, or covered by Fair Use standards.
Privacy policy
Photographers may shoot participants at athletics events on school grounds, or attendees at events in common areas (e.g. auditorium, gymnasium, outdoor areas) of the school during after-school hours when it is reasonable to assume that there is no expectation of privacy. Students shall obtain consent of any photographed individuals when shooting within a classroom.
Letters to the Editor and commenting
The Saber welcomes comments on stories and Letters to the Editor. All letters and comments must:
- Be signed with a first and last name.
- Be verified to ensure the person actually wrote the comment or letter.
- Not be libelous, slanderous, defamatory, or profane.
Letters and comments become property of The Saber and cannot be removed or retracted upon submission.

Guest writers and columnists
The Saber welcomes guest columnists who could provide alternate points of view. Columns must be reviewed by editors for content and style, and the publication reserves the right to publish or not publish the work.
